The Bust, the Bad, and the Boring

Last night a water main busted in front of my college and erupted into the street, causing chaos and the need for portable toilets on campus. Luckily I don't live there so I was able to enjoy my just finished cup of coffee without worrying about possible contaminants described as "sediment." However, this bust resulted in the cancellation of classes between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm. My classes. While most students would be overjoyed and running around campus as if they'd won the lottery, I sat in my bed dumbfounded by the news.
I had already awoken at 6:30 am so that I could study up on my organic chemistry before my quiz at 9:00 am. Teeth brushed, face washed,  coffee in hand, I was reviewing NMR Spectroscopy when I received the alert that classes were cancelled. There was no going to sleep now. It was then I had to make a major decision: how should I spend my day?
There were several options: study up on my MCAT Physical Sciences section (my weakest), study up on Financial Accounting (my least favorite class), go shopping and waste money (not a great idea), or sit and stare at the walls. Trying to make a decision reignited my dull and ever present headache which had assaulted my brain around 10 hours before.
I opted for none of the choices I had proposed. I threw my organic chemistry aside and tried to find some people who might want to do something fun. Seeing as all my friends work just as hard as I do, everyone started taking this time as a "catch-up" period and started homework for next week! Talk about overachievers. This plan was as big of a bust as the water main that started the whole debacle.
At this point I was brooding on the couch wishing I had in fact had classes. I was thinking about how we would now be one lecture behind and this would push my Microbiology exam to the Monday after next, thus making that week contain 3 exams instead of 2. I thought, "you know you're a nerd when you are disappointed by cancelled classes." By now I'm sure you are wondering how exactly I spent this Friday off?
I attempted to watch television and played a video game for a bit, and I even explored my artistic side by creating an interesting self-portrait in photoshop. In the end however, I am still bored. But maybe boredom is okay. Every now and then the brain needs a day off, especially for pre-med students. And maybe a postponed microbiology exams isn't such a bad thing either. At least I will have time to study some physics before I take my free practice MCAT from Kaplan next Saturday.
